Practical
Anaerobic Bacteriology Workshops
Description
This workshop consists of three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory.
The lecture portion will cover theoretical aspects of obligate anaerobiosis,
types of infections involving anaerobic bacteria and the anaerobic organisms
most frequently involved in infections. Techniques covered will include
specimen collection, primary isolation, identification and susceptibility
testing. The laboratory session will present unknown organisms for identification
using rapid, inexpensive and reliable procedures.
Course
Objectives
At the conclusion of the seminar, the participants will be able to:
- Explain
the mechanism of oxygen toxicity, which is harmful to anaerobes.
- Evaluate
the strengths and weaknesses of various systems that provide anaerobic
conditions.
- Recognize
minimum requirements for the successful collection of anaerobic specimens.
- Identify
the primary media for the isolation of anaerobic bacteria.
- Apply
and interpret rapid spot tests for the identification of anaerobes.
- Identify
the most common anaerobes in clinical specimens.

Short
Course on Anaerobic Bacteriology for the Clinical Lab
Description
This abbreviated version of the Practical Anaerobic Bacteriology course
ranges from two hours to half a day in length. Printed placemats
and the Anaerobe Educator interactive software
are used in place of live unknowns for an accelerated treatment of anaerobe
identification.
