Brucella Blood Agar(BRU), Phenylethyl Alcohol Blood Agar(PEA), Laked Blood Agar with Kanamycin and Vancomycin(LKV)

AS-303 combination package is the standard primary setup for anaerobic culture workup. This combination contains a Brucella Blood Agar (BRU), Phenylethylalcohol Blood Agar (PEA), and Laked Kanamycin Vancomycin (LKV) plate. This convenient three plate package contains all the necessary media types in one easy to open package. All our media is pre-reduced and anaerobically sterilized (PRAS) so all you have to do is streak the plates. With a three month shelf-life and room temperature storage this is the most convenient system available.

BRU is an enriched non-selective agar medium. BRU is intended for the isolation, quantitation and partial identification of obligate anaerobic bacteria from clinical specimens. It is supplemented with vitamin K1 and hemin to facilitate the recovery and pigment production of Prevotella melaninogenica. Sheep blood has been added for the observation of hemolytic reactions as seen by the double zone b - hemolysis of Clostridium perfringens. This medium will also support the growth of aerobic and microaerophilic bacteria if incubated appropriately. BRU is also suitable for use in susceptibility testing, antibiotic differential disk examination and spot biochemical testing. This medium is prepared, stored and dispensed under oxygen-free conditions to prevent the formation of oxidized products prior to use.

LKV is an enriched selective medium for the isolation and partial identification of obligately anaerobic gram-negative bacilli.  LKV contains vancomycin to inhibit the growth of gram-positive microorganisms and kanamycin to inhibit the growth of gram-negative, facultatively-anaerobic bacilli.  The sheep blood in the medium is laked and vitamin K1 is added to facilitate the recovery and pigment production of Prevotella melaninogenica.  This medium is prepared, stored and dispensed under oxygen-free conditions to prevent the formation of oxidized products prior to use.

PEA is an enriched selective medium for the isolation of obligately anaerobic bacteria from clinical specimens. PEA medium contains phenylethylalcohol to inhibit the growth of gram-negative, facultatively-anaerobic bacteria and prevent swarming. This medium will support the growth of most obligate anaerobic bacteria, both gram positive and gram negative. The PEA medium is especially useful in selective isolation of anaerobes from mixed populations that contain rapidly growing gram-negative bacteria such as Proteus species. This medium is prepared, stored and dispensed under oxygen-free conditions to prevent the formation of oxidized products prior to use.
